Happy Holidays!

I heard an interview with James Taylor and Carole King the other day and James mentioned that he had embraced an "Attitude of Gratitude" this holiday season.

That really resonated with me.

I've done and said a lot of dumb things this year but I'm so grateful for the good things that are in my life that I so often overlook.

I've taken a moment to pause and reflect on the how fortunate I am.

Happy Holidays to everyone in the DDLP,

Cool email option

I was introduced to this free online service a few days ago.

Texting in public = cool for kids - uncool for adults
Jott-ing = cool for adults

Simply create an account.
Setup an address book of email addresses that you want to send messages to.
Use your cell phone to call a toll free JOTT number and dictate your message which will be sent to the email address.
The recipient of your message can read the transcript/text or listen to your voice.
It's worked flawlessly for me over the past few days.

It seemed like a cool thing to Post to the Blog.
Let me know if you try it out and find it useful, Charlie

Block Captains idea

Check out the Blog for a Poll that you can take on the Neighborhood Watch, Block Captains idea.

Block Captains- Do We Need Them?

Some interest has been expressed in organizing a neighborhood watch for the DDLP Neighborhood. We have a good start already with our email network. Since no one has taken the bull by the horns and arranged an organizational meeting, I would like to suggest that maybe we get started by organizing smaller meetings by Block or Street.

The neighbors on each Block/Street could get together, talk about the idea of a neighborhood watch, pinpoint their major concerns, and elect/appoint a Block Captain. The Block Captains (and any other interested individuals) could then get together and share each street's concerns and ideas. Smaller meetings should be easier to organize than one large meeting.

The Neighborhood Watch Manual suggests that Block Captains be designated for every 10-15 houses, so some of the longer Streets may want to subdivide, and some of the shorter Blocks may want to combine. Here is how the Manual describes a Block Captain's responsibilities:
-acts as liason between block residents and the coordinator of the larger Neighborhood Watch organization;
-establishes a telephone chain by compiling and distributing a current list of names, addresses, and telephone numbers of block participants;
-visits and invites new residents to join by notifying them of meetings;
-establishes the "Operation Identification" program (marking possessions with ID so if stolen they can be more easily returned);
-contacts neighbors about crime problems, needs for assistance, and suggestions.

These are just suggestions of course. What do you all think about this?

Anybody else on Canterbury Street interested in attending an organizational Street meeting in November?

Neighborhood Watch Manual

The official Neighborhood Watch Manual For Citizens and For Law Enforcement is available here:

Other good publications can be found here:

I have downloaded the official Neighborhood Watch Manual For Citizens and For Law Enforcement and would be glad to print out a copy for anyone in the DDLP neighborhood who is interested. I have put it into a format that I can fold down into a 5.5x8.5 booklet, which is a bit more tree-friendly than printing it straight from the website.

Attempted Burglary Reported Today

Someone pried open a window on the back of a house on Dellwood Drive this morning, Tuesday October 9. They were able to force the window open about 4 inches, but were discouraged from actually entering the home by the resident Rottweiler. The Greensboro police were notified and a report was filed for the incident.

!!!DO NOT HESITATE to call the police and report ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY!!!

Later, about 3:40 in the afternoon, a white male, approximately 25 years old, with short blonde hair, wearing a tan polo type shirt and blue jeans, was seen knocking on the front door of several residences on Dellwood Drive. He appeared to be heading towards Cone Boulevard. He was apparently begging for money to pay for a trip to Africa.

!!!DO NOT HESITATE to call the police and report possible VIOLATIONS OF THE LAW!!!

From the Greensboro Municipal Code:

Sec. 20-69. Place.
Any person who begs or solicits alms for his or her own personal gain when the person is in any of the following places is guilty of a misdemeanor:
(1) At any bus stop or train stop;

Snakes in the neighborhood

Where is Samuel L. Jackson when you need him? ;-)
*reference to the movie Snakes On A Plane.
as in, "I've had it with these snakes in the neighborhood."

Look what we saw in the middle of Canterbury street tonite.

A nice size juvenile Copperhead snake.

With some discussion and regret, we made the tough decision to kill the snake.

We were concerned for our domesticated animals/pets.
As the dry and hot summer comes to a conclusion...Happy Autumnal Equinox everybody!
*Today marks the first day of Fall.
Here are some Copperhead facts:
* It is the only venomous snake in our area.
* Eats insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and small mammals.
* Copperhead bites are serious but rarely, if ever fatal. Seek immediate medical attention.
* Habitat: individuals often hide beneath boards, sheets of tin, and similar objects around old rural buildings. Old sawdust piles are a favorite.
* Adults can range from 24 to 45 inches in length.
Note: the adolescent that we saw tonite was approximately 16 inches long.

Summary of Crime in the DDLP Neighborhood in 2007

So far this year, 18 crimes have been reported in the DDLP neighborhood according to the Greensboro P2C (Police to Citizen) website. We’ve had three burglaries, six larcenies, five acts of vandalism, three reports of a missing juvenile (from the same address), and one threatening phone call.

Two of the burglaries occurred at residences. One case is currently inactive and the other has been closed because prosecution was declined. A burglary at the Lawndale Swim and Tennis Club has been cleared by an arrest.

The majority of the larcenies involved motor vehicles, with Hondas being the target of choice. Of the motor vehicle larcenies, one case is inactive and the other three have been closed because all leads have been exhausted.

Only one larceny was committed on a residence and it has been cleared by an arrest. Joyner Elementary School has apparently experienced both a larceny and an instance of vandalism. Both cases are inactive.

One act of vandalism to a residence has been labeled as unfounded by the police department and is closed. The other three reports of vandalism involved motor vehicles and all of those are currently inactive.

The missing juvenile was located in each instance and those cases are closed.

The threatening phone call resulted in an arrest.

New Neighborhood Jam Night

The neighborhood jam has moved from Wednesdays to TUESDAYs.

The next jam will be on TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 25 at Charlie&Hester's house.

We get started around 8pm, and play for about an hour/hour and a half. Now that the long, hot summer is on its way out we may be able to get back to playing on the side porch!

Arrests in the DDLP neighborhood 2004-2007

Year/# of Arrests/Streets Affected

2004 7 Canterbury/Kenmore; Dellwood; Normandy; Pershing; Shamrock
2005 3 Dublin; Wingate
2006 4 Dellwood; Dublin; Normandy
2007 3 Canterbury/Dellwood; Dublin/Shamrock; Lenox

I am using the Greensboro Police Department’s Police to Citizen (P2C) website to compile data about incidents and arrests in the DDLP neighborhood.

Arrest reports are not available online, so the information is pretty much confined to “where” and “when.” I have not included those arrests that occurred outside the perimeter of the DDLP Neighborhood near the intersections of Pisgah Church/Normandy, Lawndale/Wingate, Lawndale/Dellwood, and Cone/Dellwood.

I am not a statistician. I have tried to be careful when looking at the information and reports on the P2C website, but errors are likely to occur for a number of reasons: designations as “street” or “drive” are sometimes used interchangeably in the reports; the Dellwood north of Cone is sometimes hard to distinguish from the Dellwood south of Cone; some street names are used more than once in Greensboro (to name a few of the pitfalls for amateurs like me).

A New Poll on the Blog

There's a new poll on the Blog.

Please take a minute to check it out and decide if you wanna participate with a response.

Give us some feedback

I figured out how to get the Blog to email everybody whenever a Comment is added to the Blog.

There was some feedback that the Comments were important and sending an email to everybody would be helpful.

That's been fixed.

Currently, there are 69 email addresses that are members of the Blog.
What a great response!!!

The September party

Thanks to The Aceves and Cybulski families for hosting the September party.

Thanks to everybody that helped out.

Thanks to everybody that brought food.

We had lots of fun sharing with friends and neighbors.

If you stuck around after dark, some of us played music for a while, too.

I'll have some more of the pictures that I took up on the Internet, soon.

The DDLP Blog evolution

The DDLP Blog is starting to get some traction.
The content of the Blog so far seems relevant, responsible and recreational.

I've created a Distribution list so that we can get automated emails whenever there is a new Post on the Blog.

If you aren't getting the automated emails:
1. you didn't respond to the email that I sent out the other day
2. your email address wasn't in that list of folks that I sent email to.

Just email me and I'll Add you to the list if you want automated emails from this Blog.

Let me know if this is confusing or you have any additional comments.
Thanks, Charlie

p.s. I'm gonna delete this Post from the Blog in a day or so.
It's really a test to see if the new automated email trick worked.
p.s.s ooops i left out the word 'Add' in the "just email me and I'll ..." sentence, in the first version of this Post.

Neighborhood News

There will be a neighborhood party hosted by the Aceves and Cybulski families on Sunday evening (time TBA), September 2 on the corner of Canterbury and Normandy. Please come and meet your neighbors. Bring a little snack to share to eat and your own adult drinks. There are usually sodas and fruit drinks for the kids available. For more details watch the neighborhood blog and make sure you get on the email list!

Mary Mig has been heading a neighborhood email list that has provided us with information about break-ins, some shady solicitors working the neighborhood, some great neighborhood yard sales and the Wednesday night music jam at Charlie and Hester’s. Her email is if you would like to be a part of the list, email her with the subject line “neighborhood email”.

Charlie and Hester have also established a new neighborhood blog. It will feature community news and concerns. It’s still developing so check it out and give them your suggestions and comments.

Water Restrictions for Greensboro

City of Greensboro imposes water restrictions

The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area - 11:16 AM EDT Wednesday, August 22, 2007

The city of Greensboro said Wednesday that, effective Aug. 27, it was enacting Stage IIA - Level I Warning mandatory water restrictions.

Under the restrictions, irrigation by sprinkler is allowed only one day a week, with residents only being allowed to use sprinklers to water their lawns or gardens on the same day their garbage is collected.

Watering by hand-held hoses, containers or drip irrigation is still allowed any day of the week.
Penalties for breaking the rules include warnings and fines of up to $200 for residential owners and up to $1,000 for nonresidential owners.

"With the continued high water demand and below-normal rainfall, we have reached 150 days' supply in our reservoirs," said Allan Williams, director of the city's Water Resources department.

"Although we had hoped to avoid mandatory water restrictions, long-range forecasts don't show substantial likelihood of rain, and it is necessary to impose restrictions at this time."

The restrictions will remain in effect for at least 30 days.

Wednesday Night Jam

A couple of months ago three neighbors starting getting together once a week for an acoustic jam on Charlie&Hester's side porch on Canterbury Street. The heat index has forced us indoors into the comfort of the AC, but we're still at it, and we plan to keep meeting at 8pm every Wednesday night for the foreseeable future. It's a nice break in the usual work week.

The jam is usually acoustic tho' Chris & Charlie plugged in last week. All skill levels are welcome (i'm just learning the mandolin and the guys have been very helpful and supportive). We usually jam for about an hour and a half.

Everyone in the neighborhood has an open invitation to drop in and play!
